At George Tomlinson Primary School, we use Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc. programme to teach phonics. Children are taught in matched level learning groups using a ‘stage not age’ approach.
At George Tomlinson Primary we believe the development of language and literacy is of the highest priority. We want all our children to develop a love of reading and the writing skills to help them progress in all areas of the curriculum, and in life.
We focus on ensuring the new National Curriculum is effectively delivered, that teaching and learning is of a high standard and consistent across the school and we focus on children who need additional support with their learning.
Children starting the Read Write Inc program will experience a rapid and intensive teaching program, arming them with the skills to decode and make sense of what they read. They move swiftly through the book bands and become fluent and confident readers by the end of the course.
Teachers plan collaboratively and creatively to ensure English lessons are engaging and instructional throughout the school. Designated reading time each day allows teachers to teach reading skills, listen to children reading and assess their next steps on a daily basis.
Destination Reader is a guided reading strategy we have introduced across Key Stage 2, here children learn how to actively listen, respond to texts and one another and make predictions, infer details and share their ideas about high quality texts.
Handwriting and spelling are taught on a daily basis as well as Spelling and Grammar in line with the new curriculum. Children will bring spellings home once a week to help them revise the words they have been learning in class.
We address English as an additional language and special educational needs throughout the school with the help and input of our SENDCO.
We have a strong focus on parental support with reading, children are rewarded for effort in home reading weekly and termly and we encourage parent volunteers to come and read with our children.
At George Tomlinson we believe all our children have the potential to become successful readers and writers, should develop a love of books and show an enthusiasm for their learning.
