At George Tomlinson, we place a high priority on children acquiring a sound grasp of the phonics system and being able to apply this when reading and writing. From Nursery to Year 1/2, we follow the Read Write Inc. (RWI) synthetic phonics programme.
At George Tomlinson Primary we believe the development of language and literacy is of the highest priority. We want all our children to develop a love of reading and the writing skills to help them progress in all areas of the curriculum, and in life.
Children starting the Read Write Inc program will experience a rapid and intensive teaching program, arming them with the skills to decode and make sense of what they read. They move swiftly through the book bands and become fluent and confident readers by the end of the programme.
We address English as an additional language and special educational needs throughout the school with the help and input of our SENDCO. Pupils of any age, who are struggling to decode, are taught to do this through a rigorous and systematic phonics programme so that they catch up rapidly with their peers.
Parent workshops, homework assignments and class ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions and curriculum newsletters provide extra information on how we teach phonics.
We have a strong focus on parental support with reading, children are rewarded for effort in home reading weekly and we encourage parent volunteers to come and read with our children.
We also hold parent’s open mornings in EYFS, Years 1 & 2 where parents are invited to stay and read with their child in class.
