George Tomlinson Primary is a three form entry community school set in the heart of Leytonstone, a stone’s throw away from the tube and with easy access into the heart of London on the central line. Our recently extended school site is modern, clean and bright with an outstanding EYFS facility including large outdoor space and resources. We enjoy sole use of a school field situated just off Vernon Road and a recently developed Edible Playground complete with growing spaces for each class, a fire pit and hens.
At George Tomlinson we believe that all children deserve outstanding quality first teaching that is supported by excellent curricular opportunities and extended services that nurture and engage children. We want to inspire brilliance in a stable and safe environment through creative practice. We want our pupils to feel that when it comes to aspirations the sky is the limit and to prepare them fully for life at secondary school and beyond. We believe in achieving Excellence through Enjoyment.
We have a highly progressive, engaging and challenging curriculum that is accessible for all pupils. We use In the Moment Planning in EYFS and Year 1, Project-based Learning in Years 2-6, Read, Write, Inc Phonics for teaching reading, CLPE for writing, an outstanding Guided Reading programme called Destination Reader, Singapore-inspired Maths programme called Inspire Maths and Philosophy 4 Children. We highly prize the creative arts, with instrumental music tuition of guitar, ukulele, recorder and violin taught in KS2 as well as a choir and huge variety of after school and lunchtime clubs. We value modern foreign languages with French taught from Reception to Year 6. Annually we take Year 4 and 5 pupils on a day trip to France to immerse them in French culture!
We are high achievers when it comes to Sport and our children are given many opportunities to succeed in a range of sports and dance delivered by two sports coaches who passionately believe in all children accessing and enjoying an active day at George Tomlinson. Every class from Year 1 to 6 also completes the Daily Mile. We are passionate about becoming a Healthy School and one where pupil voice is prominent so that children have a say in their own education. We are becoming a UN Rights Respecting School as well as working towards our Artsmark award. Pupil led assemblies, school council and community groups all enable the empowerment of our pupils and develop higher engagement in their learning. We hold creative and challenging activities such as a French trip in Year 4, a Year 6 residential trip and we completed a climb of Mount Snowdon for some of our Year 5 and 6 girls. We believe in the importance of children’s well-being and happiness as much as their academic successes and we work on our Growth Mind-set across the school as well as delivering Mindfulness lessons. Our pupils and families are also supported through Place 2 Be, a counselling service based in school for two days each week.
We love our multi-cultural community, where all religions and nationalities are represented and celebrated, our diversity is one of our biggest strengths. We run weekly coffee mornings, a free toddler group and have multiple events designed to invite parents into school.
We live out our vision of ‘Excellence through Enjoyment’ and our key words: Diverse, Happy, Creative, Inspiring and Ambitious in all we do.
No matter how snazzy the website, nothing beats a tour of the school; so feel free to arrange a visit through our office. We would love to meet you!
Best wishes,
Verity Carter
